Travel back in time to the heart of Rioja, Spain. We will descend 45 feet underground into four authentic 16th-century ‘calados’ (caves), hand-carved over 500 years ago, where wine still rests in perfect natural conditions.
After exploring this stone labyrinth and learning about traditional artisan winemaking, we will enjoy a guided tasting of 3 premium estate wines. To make it a true local experience, the tasting is paired with traditional Riojan appetizers (local chorizo and cured meats) in a setting you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
Drinks: Tasting of 3 selected wines (Crianza, Reserva, and Signature wines).
Food: A platter of “KM 0” local Riojan cold cuts (chorizo and salchichón).
Admission: Full access to the private historical caves of Bodegas Lecea.
What to bring: “Please bring a light jacket or sweater. Even in summer, the caves stay at a constant 13°C (55°F) year-round.”
Footwear: “Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as we will be walking on historical stone floors.”
The winery is located in San Asensio. By car, it is a 15-minute drive from Haro and 25 minutes from Logroño. You can easily find us on GPS as "Bodegas Lecea." If you prefer a taxi, we recommend booking one in advance; feel free to message us if you need a local taxi number.
Yes! The underground caves maintain a natural constant temperature of 13°C (55°F) all year round. Even if it is very hot outside, please bring a light jacket or sweater to enjoy the tasting comfortably.
Because these are authentic 16th-century caves, there are several flights of stairs to descend and uneven stone floors. Unfortunately, the underground portion of the tour is not wheelchair accessible or suitable for those with significant walking difficulties.
You are more than welcome! We offer non-alcoholic grape juice so you can still enjoy the history of the caves and the traditional appetizers with the rest of the group. Please let us know in advance.
